Mr. Larry M. Layton, a resident of Lucedale, MS for the past 5 years and a long-time resident of Wewahitchka, FL transitioned to his eternal home on May 5, 2018. Larry passed away surrounded by his loving wife and children in Little Rock, AR where he had spent many months over the past 10 years battling multiple myeloma. He was a fighter until the end putting the myeloma in remission more than once.
Larry was born on December 28, 1946, in Donalsonville, GA. He was 71 years young. He was a loving husband to his wife Elaine Lee Layton and a much cherished father to his two children DeWayne (Jenny) Layton and Lori Layton (Mike) Ellis. He was also an adored Papa to seven beautiful grandchildren that he loved tremendously. His grandchildren Mia, Gabby, Eli, Lexi, Zach, and Marlowe were the apples of his eye and will truly be his greatest legacy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Porter M. and Mary Frances Layton of Wewahitchka, FL, his wife’s parents Ellis Ray and Gracie Davis Lee of Lucedale, MS, whom he loved like his own, and one brother-in-law Colen Ray Lee. He is survived by his wife Elaine, his children DeWayne and Lori Ann, his seven grandchildren, one sister Linda Layton (John) Burttschell, and two sisters-in-law Loraine (Mitchell) McDerment and Mary (Colen) Lee. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews and 11 great nieces and nephews.
Larry was a hard working, devoted, loyal, and honest employee of both the St. Joseph Paper Company and the Florida Department of Corrections. His knowledge of all things historical and nature-related earned him the nickname Professor Peabody, which he embodied and loved.
Larry was a devoted and honorable member of the Tupelo Lodge #289 of the Free and Accepted Masons of Florida. He valued the brothers of his lodge and the values and ideals for which the Free Masons stand.
He was a kind-hearted man who is already greatly missed. His loss is only lessened by the promise he will meet us again.
