Richard Conway "Bull" Green Obituary

Richard Conway “Bull” Green was forever healed on May 8, 2026, as he passed peacefully surrounded by his daughters. He was born October 29, 1946 to Slonie Loy “S.L.” and Ernestine Marie Green in Taylorsville, MS. Sometime in his early childhood, he moved to Helena with his mother and two older sisters. There he attended school and worked on the farm until he finished school in 1964. He stayed in Helena where he met his wife, Bettie Lou Sawyer. They were married in 1972 and remained happily married until her passing in November of 2010. She was the love of his life, and they had three daughters, Tiffany, A’ndrea and Keira. He was a trooper for raising three girls and resigned himself to being late everywhere he went.

Richard spent most of his working years at Mississippi Chemical/Mississippi Phosphates, where he built lifelong friendships. He also had many dear friends through his membership in East Central Masonic Lodge 631 where he enjoyed fellowship and camaraderie. He and his buddies were always up to some kind of shenanigans. Lord was he a jokester!

He was good at “figuring things out,” so he earned a reputation for being able to fix just about anything. He had a mechanical mind that would surpass the greatest mechanical engineer hands down. He always knew that was his calling, so he just used what he knew and created and fixed things – at home, at work, or wherever (even the side of the road when a daughter’s car was broken down!).

After retirement he enjoyed an extensive list of hobbies including woodworking, fishing, eating lunch and joking around with his buddies, reading, and watching historical documentaries. We jokingly referred to him as a World War II aficionado, and oh how he loved teaching his grandchildren how to do things and telling them stories. With very little practice, he became an accomplished woodworker, refusing to sell any of his creations. He always said he did it because he loved it, and he crafted so many beautiful pieces from turned bowls to display cases to dining room tables. He even designed his own signature and branded it into his pieces. Aptly enough, if you look closely, you can see that it is bull ears and a G for Bull Green. So many people are lucky enough to have been blessed with one of his works of art.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Bettie, parents S.L. Green and Ernestine Shepperson, sisters Olene Nixon and Myrna Butler, brother Lester Shepperson, and his beloved dog Greta.

He leaves behind a beautiful legacy in his daughters and their families - Tiffany and Bill Webb; A’ndrea and Harold Tillman, Colby Tiser and Asa Green; and Keira, Kevin, Kale, Kamryn, and Kole Fant. He is survived by his siblings Sheila Clark, Paul Shepperson, and Paula and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

The Visitation will be Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at Wade Baptist Church from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. The Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 PM in the church sanctuary with Bro. Randy Von Kanel officiating. Burial will follow in Serene Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Kevin Fant, Kale Fant, Kole Fant, Asa Green, Harold Tillman, Colby Tiser, and Bill Webb. Honorary pallbearers will be Winfred Pierce, Clay Law, Delwood “Pop” Tanner, and Clyde “Butch” Britt.

Richard, Daddy, Bull, Mr. Richard – however you knew him – lived a life with a servant’s heart; he was a big man but such a softie, often referred to as a big teddy bear. He quietly helped those in need and was especially fond of giving to admirable organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Fighting for Fant.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Richard’s memory to one of these organizations or the organization of your choice.
