Shirley Gayle Herndon

Shirley Gayle Herndon, age 85, passed away April 29, 2021. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA. She taught at Leakesville Jr. High for over 25 years. She was a faithful member of Washington Missionary Baptist Church and a member of a local quilting club. She was an avid bowler and participated in the Senior Olympics where she received several gold and silver medals with her husband. She loved to travel across the country with her family. She was a proud mother of four children, a loving grandmother, sister and sweet friend to so many.                 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Herndon; granddaughter, Ashley Herndon; parents, Jay Hugh and Katherine Hillman; brother, Gary Hillman, Sr.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Pamela (Andy) Breland, Denise (Donnie) Craig, Charles “Terry” (Lisa) Herndon, Jr., and Leonard Herndon; grandchildren, Dax Rau, Jessica Telegan, Matthew Craig, Matthew Jones, Daryl Hicks, Pamela Moyer and Angel Herndon; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings, Noel “Cotton” (Lou) Hillman, Paul (Betty) Hillman, Phillip (Lisa) Hillman and Craig (Joy) Hillman; numerous other relatives and friends.                 

The Visitation for Shirley Herndon will be Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Washington Missionary Baptist Church in Neely. The Funeral Service will begin in the church sanctuary at 2:00 PM with Bro. Rayburn Freeman and Bro. Bruce Walley officiating.  Burial will follow in Washington Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers include Dax Rau, Jason Hillman, Noah Mauldin, Eric Hillman, Derrick Hillman and Conner McLendon. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Hillman and Seth Mauldin.
